The scheme is similar to ISO 14001 but sets higher requirements. Organizations registered under EMAS must demonstrate compliance with environmental legislation and publicly disclose information about significant environmental aspects, environmental objectives and targets, and key environmental performance data.\n\nResponsibility for the implementation and promotion of EMAS within the European Union is shared by several institutions.\n\nThe European Commission is responsible for the development and supervision of the scheme at EU level.
