EMAS

The European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary system designed for companies and other organizations wishing to commit to assessing, managing and improving their environmental performance. EMAS was established in 1993 and updated in 2001. The scheme is similar to ISO 14001 but sets higher requirements. Organizations registered under EMAS must demonstrate compliance with environmental legislation and publicly disclose information about significant environmental aspects, environmental objectives and targets, and key environmental performance data. Responsibility for the implementation and promotion of EMAS within the European Union is shared by several institutions. The European Commission is responsible for the development and supervision of the scheme at EU level. It also coordinates promotion activities across Europe and has established the EMAS Helpdesk, which supports the Commission by answering questions from the public and business entities. Each member state is required to establish a national registration and assessment system administered by a designated Competent Body and Accreditation Body.
