The ISO 22000 standard was developed in alignment with other international management system standards, including ISO 9001. Therefore, it is ideal for integrating a food safety management system into existing management systems and business processes.
ISO 22000 applies to all organizations directly or indirectly involved in the food chain, including manufacturers of packaging materials or cleaning agents, and providers of cleaning, pest control or industrial laundry services.
The standard enables organizations to assess and demonstrate product conformity with food safety requirements and to prove control of food safety risks. ISO 22000 ensures food safety “from farm to fork” based on the following key elements:
- Interactive communication – An advanced and essential factor in risk management. Structured information flow in all directions, both internal and external, ensures effective risk control.
- System management – Control of interactions between system elements ensures overall system effectiveness.
- Prerequisite programmes – Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Hygiene Practice (GHP) and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), including equipment and building maintenance programmes, procedures and pest control programmes, provide the foundation for the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system.
- RVASVT principles – The basic methodology for planning safe production processes, applicable to each organization without unnecessary bureaucracy.
The main benefits of ISO 22000 certification include measurable improvement of food safety performance and stronger compliance with legal requirements.
ISO 22000 allows organizations to:
- Establish and manage a food safety management system using a well-defined and flexible structure adapted to business needs
- Identify real risks to customers and the organization
- Create tools for monitoring and measuring food safety performance improvement
- Ensure better compliance with food safety legal requirements
Certification according to this standard provides an effective means of cooperation with partners and other interested parties. It is an important element in demonstrating compliance with food safety, responsible business and financial accountability requirements.
