LST EN ISO 50001 Energy management systems – Requirements and guidance for use (ISO 50001)
Standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system. The standard can be applied by any organization seeking to ensure effective energy management. Organizations that cannot control their energy consumption cannot ensure long-term sustainability, as energy consumption increases every year while resources are becoming more limited and more expensive. Energy costs represent an increasing share of operating expenses for organizations.
Efficient energy use is one of Lithuania’s key strategic goals, as energy consumption per unit of GDP is approximately 2.5 times higher than the EU average.
In accordance with EU Directive 2012/27/EU, an energy efficiency action plan was developed, aiming to save 3.4 GWh of energy during 2015–2020. A compliance obligation system was established, and support was provided for fulfilling these obligations. Organizations were required to perform energy audits by 5 December 2015 (with support funding of 25 million LTL) and were encouraged to implement energy management systems.
The number of organizations worldwide that have implemented and certified energy management systems (ISO 50001) is growing rapidly (in 2013, the number increased by 116%, compared to 3% growth for ISO 9001 certificates and 6% for ISO 14001).
